Description
The Navstar 1 GPS Satellite (Block 1) is more than just a model; it’s a technical tribute to the pioneer of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Launched on February 22, 1978, the Navstar 1 was the cornerstone of the concept-validation phase for the technology that now defines global navigation.
Originally conceptualized for a LEGO Ideas space challenge in 2023, this model represents a deep dive into late-70s aerospace development. Manufactured by Rockwell International, the original satellite was designed to prove that high-precision atomic clocks in orbit could provide synchronized 3D positioning. This build captures the technical “guts” of that mission, from the intricate antenna arrays used for L1 and L2 signals to the functional, folding 400 W solar arrays.
